Messier 78 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. It is the
brightest diffuse reflection nebula of a group of nebulae that
includes NGC 2064, NGC 2067 and NGC 2071. This group belongs
to the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, which is about 1,600
light-years distant from Earth.
The above wide-field image shows M 78 near the centre and
the famous Horsehead Nebula to the south-west of M 78. To the east
of M78 the huge, but faint emission nebula Barnard's Loop is visble.
